Throwback: In their last encounter, there was also a lot at stake. While UAE could have secured the crucial 3rd place in the third qualifying round with a win on the penultimate matchday against Iraq, the Lions of Mesopotamia desperately needed a victory to keep their World Cup hopes alive. In the end, Iraq triumphed with a goal from Hussein Ali and kept their hopes intact. However, on the following and final matchday, came the bitter disappointment: UAE surprisingly defeated South Korea, securing the hard-fought third place in the group, while Iraq was eliminated.
